Kai Antics

Yesterday I was going to drop kai to school. The moment we went out, she just jumped laughing and was telling me "Mamma on that house it was written I am a house" and she just couldn't stop laughing. I started wondering what actually was it. So I asked her "beta where exactly did you read this?" and she said "just across our house. On the building next to Rituraj".

I started thinking and then even I could not stop laughing.

It actually was that the office of Indian Managaement Academy has come up just across our house. The interiors are being done up and they have painted on the house in bold letters "IMA HOUSE". I explained to Kai what exactly it meant and couldn't stop laughing either.

I just love these antics of my little one!!!

The Right School for your kid

Deciding on the right school for your kid is definitely a tough decision in these days when we have so many choices and different schools marketing themselves with different features. I m sure as a parent everyone of us would have faced this confusion and some of us would have felt that a combination of these schools would have been best for my child.

After having gone through all of this, we had finalised a school for kai, which we thought was the right one for us - kai, Ri and me. We had shortlisted a few school and I had been to these schools before making the final decision. I would stand outside the school gate to talk to parents who would come to pick up their child. This was all because we were not very much for a very strict school with too much burden on the child however at the same time we realised that we also wanted some discipline to be present in the schools. Distance of the school was also my biggest concern as i did not want a school that was too far. Since both of us have studied in a missionary school, we were a bit keen on putting kai also in a missionary school. However, we opted out of this as one of the schools was a girls school and also both the schools didnot fit into our criteria.

We selected her school considering all the aspects that mattered to us and after we felt that this was the best one for her. However, i still would continue to talk to people about different schools and was always eager to hear their reviews.

Having heard different reviews, my biggest concern was that my daughter has to be herself in the school also. She is a talkatvie, curious, creative, nature loving person. I have seen kids who are altogether different at school and at home. I was always concerned that the school should help her be the person she is - of course, I understand that certain things need to taught to her in school and how the school cannot do this under all circumstances. But i feel this for my daughter who is quite matured, understands instructions and also can understand right and wrong when explained properly. I have always tried to explain things to her rather than dictating things.

Kai's school has a screen displayed outside the school and it screens the photographs of the children and various celebrations that they hold. Today I saw the pictures of the Green Day celebration that they did at school. Kai was supposed to sing her poem on "A Green World" whcih she sang at the recitation competition and was awarded 3 stars for "outstanding performance". I saw these pictures and other pictures of the green day. I also saw the playful side of Kai at the visit to the vegetable and fruit garden in their school. She had her differnt funny poses and it made me think that "Yes! my daughter contuinues to be the same in school and at home".

I was happy for the choice that we made!!

Too Much Learning for Little Brains?

Conversation between kai and me

Kai: Mamma, my school keeps on moving round and round (she meant revolves)

Me: What makes you think that?

Kai: Yes Ma it moves round at every night

Me: Ok tell me what makes you say that it moved round and round in the night when you see it in the morning?

Kai: See Ma Sejal Mam’s class was at the end and now it is first. Our music class was just besides the principals’ office and now it has moved on the other side

While I could not stop laughing at this conversation, I realized that this thought process took place in her mind because while reading some book, we had been explaining her about how the earth revolves round the sun.

I often wonder, is all this not too much for the tiny brains?

Ganpati Bappa Moriya!

We celebrate Ganesh pooja at my mom’s house and mom performs the pooja for all the 10 days. One evening we were going to Mom’s house to do the pooja. Kai decided to make a card for Ganpati Bappa. She and her friend sat to make separate cards. Kai drew a Ganesha, mouse, two suparis which were Ridhhi –Sidhhi, a flower and wrote “My Friend Ganesha”. While her friend was making her card, she was trying to draw a girl and Kai shouted, “Aanya don’t draw a girl – Ganesha’s wife is a supari and not a girl.”

Actually, it was because she has always seen supari depicting Ridhhi Sidhhi and has never seen a girl besides Ganesha!

Our Weekend Trip to Mt. Abu...

Yes. I finally went on the Abu trip with family and had a great time.

The day before the trip, we were supposed to collect our bags from Devalmama's house. When we collected the bags, we saw that there was 1 bag for each of us - a small bag just to have the bare necesssities of life. In all there were 23 of us - all age groups the youngest one was 2 year old and the eldest 60.

We reached Abu in 3 seperate cars - one for the moms, dads and kids. on reaching Abu we had a sumptuous meal and dinot unpack our bags and started off for the camping. After about 45 minutes of a trek - which was a bit difficult for the novices and the kids we reached a lovely place. We had five tents with us and pitched all of them. The weather was also excellent with a lot of fog that you could not even see at an arms length. We then went for a walk and sat by the Kodra dam reservoir and sang songs - since i do not have an ear for music we were just listening and enjoying the nature. When we went back to the camp site, we set-up a camp fire and had dinner. The kids then went of to sleep and we were sitting by the camp fire. Suddenly one of us saw two eyes in the darkness and a black animal. Scared, a few of them ran to their tent, zipped it open got in and closed the tent - all just in a few seconds. All of us also started running having thought that it was a wild bear. The bravehearts took a torch and were checking for the animal and........ it was a buffalo. We then went off to sleep. It was raining and very windy and at 2.00, we started having calls from the kids tent that our kids were not sleeping - kai and another boy came to the parents tent. None of us slept till 3.00 in the night.

We woke up in the morning and opened up our tents. the weather was very foggy and we could see the fog coming in our tent. The group than went for caving. We went into a small cave which was pitch dark and we had to literally lie down to cross the cave. All of us managed it and then we had our tea and breakfast there. It was the perfect spot and the perfiect weather to have your morning cuppa.

Back to the campsite, the boys (fathers, actually) went for aswim in the reservoir... and the mothers were literlally shivering seeing them swim in the cold water and weather. We then unpacked and started our trek down with our bags and tents on our backs. (This was when we realised how important it was to have a small bag...)

Having reached home (mama's house in Abu) we had lunch and did river crossing...yes they had set-up all this there. After dinner all of us relaxed, had a chat and befiore sleeping went for a drive to search Leopards and Bears - which we did not find.

The next morning we went for rock climbing and rappelling. The kids were then given Rs. 10 each and hey had to buy whatever they wanted from this. The kids had a great (and tough) time finding stuff for them in Rs. 10. Everyone ended up buying some chocolates/ candies. We then started our journey back home with a resolution to make such trips an yearly affair.

Dilemma...

Ri and all his adventurous cousins have made great plans for the long weekend. the plan is to go to Mt Abu, where his mama has a house, with family. Now that sound interesting - what is the dilemma then?

The programme was to leave for Abu with kids on Friday and return on Sunday. I did not have any idea (of course I was able to make some guesses) about who all are going? What are the plans for the kids? Food? Water? Programme? I mean how much of trekking, mountaineering and other possible or impossible adventures.

I did not know anything except the fact that we are going to Abu for 3 days and by bus. Not that I cannot go anywhere without any planning and cannot stay in a tent or take some adventure. While I would love all that, the only thing I could not take was not knowing anything and going there with the kids. This was because I was sure that it was never going to be a luxury trip with this gang. I knew that there would be some…oops…. many adventures on this trip.

My questions to Ri on the plans and the programme details went unanswered. The only thing Ri would tell me is there are so many of us and an equal number of kids.. also younger than kai…I am sure you will not have any problems. Now I definitely am not that type of a person who can take such an answer. At my insistence Ri would just tell me that even “deval mama and mami” -the organizers, sponsors, planners of this trip and all the trips that made the gang so adventurous - would not have answers to your questions. This actually was not the case but just that Ri would love these trips just as he had enjoyed them all these years with the element of “surprise”.

And this set my mind spinning for all sorts of ideas and excuses for avoiding the trip. It actually wasn’t that I did not want to go on the trip. I very well knew that I was making some unnecessary fuss over the entire thing. But I also wanted Ri and Kai both of them to tell me that I was right.

No. 1. It was a puja at my mama’s house as they have renovated their house. Ri did the architectural and interior designing work of the house. Everyone insisted that we stay back for the puja. I would tell Ri that we should stay back and enjoy the puja and the compliments for his work – as it was really done very well and we had already started receiving the compliments. This is because I thought this was the easiest bait. But as expected Ri was not at all amused by my idea.

No. 2. I cannot go like this. We do not know what we are doing, what is the programme and all and I find it too difficult to go with Kai totally unplanned. And just then I received an email of the entire programme along with the dress code and the menu (not complete but partial)

The programme was to leave on Friday morning for Mt Abu, reach there around 12.30 and then go for a trek in the Aravali mountain range. Go for a night trek, stay over night in the tent, wake up early in the morning go for mountaineering, caving, trekking and then return to the house at about 11.00 am. Then it is all relaxing and playing some indoor games at home. The next day we do some mountain climbing, rappelling, which will be followed by shopping and then leave for Ahmedabad.

Now that definitely sounds interesting and not bad at all – of course with some exceptions.

No. 3. We had to sleep in sleeping bags and yes… now I had another excuse…. Yak our sleeping bags are so bad they stink and I cannot sleep in such bags… actually they were pretty good the only problem was that we had not used them for quite some time and so there was that typical smell which obviously went away once we put them under the sun.

No. 4. Swine flu. I did not explain anything about this as I myself did not have an explaination that how would it affect us there in the middle of the forest.

Every alternate day I had different things on my mind – one day I would be excited about going and the very next day I would start thinking about excuses. Not that I had to give excuses to anybody – not Ri, not the gang, nobody. These were just excuses for myself.

We plan to leave on Friday and I still have one more day to keep on thinking. Gosh….. don’t I have any other thing to do in life?

I do not know what is going to be my ultimate decision. As of now I know that I am going.

Kai at School

Kai's school has a concept of issuing 'Tryers card' to the kids to encourage them for different things that they do in school. Kai got her first Tryers Card today for talking in English at School and Story Telling... I was sure that my little chatter box was definitely going to get one for story telling. Not only that she got a star in the card for telling stories. I am sure if they issue one for spinning stories, she will definitely be the first one to get it...

And you know which was the first story that she told in her class impromptu? It was the gujarati story "Vaadilo Hajam" from the book "Gijubhai Ni Baal Vaartao"... of course recited in English.

Kai at School

Kai is learning cursive alphabets in school. Yesterday they were taught to write the letter 'p'. The teacher then asked them to write 2 lines of 'ap', 2 lines of 'pa' and 3 lines of 'pat'. Everyone started working at it. Kai's partner made a mistake and wrote 3 lines of 'pa'. Poor little boy was about to rub the whole thing, which Kai saw. She told him, "I have an idea! you don't need to rub the whole thing but just add the letter 't' at the end and it will be done". A very simple thing which any of us would have done. The moment I heard this, I started thinking about how tricky a kid who is not even five can be??

Ri in the News

Ri is designing the snake house at the local zoo here and this was in the newspapers on the 1st of August. This will be the biggest snake house in the country. This is also a dream project for Ri as it combines both his hobby and his profession. Here is the link to the article

I love Snakes

In fact my earlier post would not make any sense, till i expalin you about the snakes story. Here it goes...

Kai and papa, both love snakes!! that's because Ri has a hobby of catching snakes. He actually rescues them voluntarily from firends places. This led to my exposure to this slimy creature. While I never loved them (actually never even thought about them), I did not mind Ri catching them. This was mainly because he knew what he was doing and recognised them well.

Kai grew up looking and actually enjoying snakes. Bed time stories for them is books on snakes, where Ri teaches her to identify different species of snakes. As of now, Kai recognises 12 snakes. they make regular visits to the local zoo and the local snake park to see the snakes.

Proud to be a snake catcher !

The best time for kai and mama to chat is bath time. The other day she started telling me “mama I like only two boys Param and Manush from my class. I do not like any other boys”. Just like any other conversation, I asked her “why? Is it that you do not like the other boys” to this my little one replied “oh! Because they are all naughty boys”. Out of curiosity, I asked the obvious question that why are they all naughty? This in fact begins our conversation

“That is because they beat everyone”

A worried mother, I asked, “Is it? Do they beat you as well?”

“Oh no! Nobody beats me (actually dares to was what her body language said)”

“Why”

“That’s because everyone knows that I catch snakes. I tell them that I will throw a snake on them if they beat me”

“Oh!”

“there was this guy pratham who said that if you throw a snake on me, I will take it and throw it off”

and the little one retorted “In that case I will get a crocodile and put it on your head” (this was because of a recent trip to Chennai Croc Bank where the father daughter duo were holding a croc.)

My God, I never knew such things were going on in her mind. Actually I heard quite some complains from her saying about someone beating her, or someone taking her sand toys, etc.

And I felt look at this self-protection mechanism in a four year old.

Splash whlie you Walk...

Last weekend we went to see Ri’s relatives. We parked the car outside the apartments and walked to their block. When returning, since it had rained there were small puddles around. As I was walking with Kai, I kept on telling her to watch her steps. Ri told me that she can have some fun and walk through the puddles.

At times I wonder how much I decide not to impose my likes and dislikes on her, how it happens unknowingly! Kai and Ri ran around and jumped in the puddles to splash the water around and believe me I was the one who enjoyed the most…. Not splashing but watching them do that.

The Solar Eclipse

The biggest solar eclipse of the century that was to happen on 22nd July was one thing that we wanted to see. Ri and cousins had made the plans to travel to Surat, sleep overnight in a tent on the banks of Tapi, see the eclipse (if the clouds permit) or else have fun and return to Ahmedabad.

The idea of spending the night in the tent on the banks of the river in the rains was a bit indigestible for me. Added to this was the fact that kids stay home. While I wanted to see the eclipse, I had to make up my mind to leave at a very short notice, leaving Kai home, trying to explain her that ma and papa will not be around, calling up nani, dadi and friends to look after her, arranging for a day off at work and all sort of thoughts that one could imagine. I decided to opt out of the visit but could not make up my mind for that too. Finally I gathered all the courage and decided to leave my daughter home – to spend her afternoon at a friends place and then at home with dadi. After I explained this to Kai, she understood that ma would leave but finally said that “I would be happy if you do not go”.

2.00 p.m. on 21st, we went to the place from where we were supposed to leave, changed into the t-shirt that all of us were going to wear and sat in the car. To my surprise (which Ri did not tell me) there were no mums except for a couple of them. This made me think about my daughter and how I left her at home. Also this brought to my mind the idea of staying on the riverbank in the rains with no body with whom I can associate myself. This was because the guys were used to staying in the tents, in the forest, for days together and this was a one of its type trip for me.

I told everyone that I am not going and would love to get down. Ri kept on telling me that now that you are here and your daughter is set to stay alone, you may join. But I could not bring myself to accept that and finally, I got down from the car to take an auto and reached home to wait for my daughter to return from her friends place.

I enjoyed watching the eclipse at home with Kai on TV and talking to Ri on how they too did not see the eclipse but enjoyed how it got pitch dark and they had a great time – not staying in the tent but at a friends place.

Finally! I am here...

Wow! finally I manage to start my blog and adding posts to it. I have been planning on starting my blog since the time Kai was born. However for some reason or the other I could not keep up to it. Finally I am here to capture Kai's growing up years, views on parenting and everything else under the sun that catches my eye and interest.
